distrACTIONS orchestrated by our political masters -- just as the baring of Janet Jackson's boob for a nanosecond distrACTed the public from the outrageous attempt to loosen the FCC ownership restrictions last June. The flap over Ms. Jackson's 'wardrobe malfunction' led to weeks of hearings and multimillion-dollar fines, while the FCC hearings were conducted in secrecy, with little media scrutiny, and delivered just what the corporate media moguls demanded. Only alert media activists and a responsive Congress reversed the FCC giveaway at the eleventh hour.

Now seriously, which of these issues will have more impact on our society? The momentary impression of a very beautiful performer's breast in a society already awash in sexy imagery and seductive song, or the shifting of yet more control into the hands of the dozen powerful corporations which control virtually everything America sees in the way of news and entertainment? Are we morally uplifted by the endless parade of inane sitcoms, "Reality TV" episodes, dumbed-down newscasts, and copycat police, war, and sci-fi series? Yet which issue gets all the airtime and attention? Wardrobe-gate, of course! And the numerous other 'decency' offenses that preoccupy FCC Chairman-designate Keith Martin.

These are the public airwaves we are allowing the broadcasters to make use of--and to profit from. The FCC is supposed to enforce ownership regulations on the public's behalf; but this "watchdog" agency has become a lap-dog of the interests it is supposed to regulate. The public mobilized to enforce its will and forced Chairman Powell out; but the other three lap-dogs remain at the FCC.

Weapons of Mass DistrACTION is a group of artists and political activists working to focus public awareness on the fact that our media sources are purveying a highly slanted version of events--slanted to influence public opinion in favor of their corporate owners.  While journalistic standards have declined and the networks' claims to objectivity are laughable, there has been no effort to differentiate editorial opinion from fact: the result is a looking-glass world in which lies masquerade as truth, the government can take over Iraq using the crudest lies and exaggerations as justification, or attempt to destroy Social Security based on highly colored allegations about its financial soundness.  All of these escapades are, in fact, red herrings meant to distrACT the public's attention from the larger picture: the wholesale looting of the American economy by neocons who ravage with all the gusto of the Sicilian Mafia.  The incident spotlighted to the left neatly captures the contradictions in this approach.

The lack of reliable information about our government, economy, and world (coupled with an increasingly lame public education system: some would say an intentionally lamed system) contributes to a poorly-informed public not used to researching and thinking out its own answers; thus ever more open to manipulation and fearmongering by unscrupulous political operatives, both in and outside of the government. This is in fact what has happened since the beginning of the Reagan era, but it has developed avalanche speed since the coronation of George II in 2001. We submit it is no coincidence that the pace of media ownership concentration follows an exactly similar trend in those years.
