Bicentennial Tower
The Bicentennial Tower, completed in 1976, is a splashy
concoction of terra-cotta, colored tile, and sectioned geodes whose sturdy
base and 4 piers seem to grow organically from the cobblestone retaining
walls below it. As a piece of whimsy, it invites comparison to Watts Towers,
though in a far more naturalistic setting. The rockwork at right is part
of the retaining wall for the patio; it backs up to the bench at center
of photo D. This
picture also shows the lawns and shrubbery on the uphill side of the Garden,
behind the Tower. Our view looks eastward.
