Tortoise - Faye Zama's beetle art car, by Dawn Frasier; photo copyright by Larry Neilson The Tortoise is another creation by Dawn Frasier, originator of Jahmbi, the incredible mobile tiki hut. Dawn painted an old VW Beetle owned by her friend Faye, carefully adding the tortoise-shell texture to the car's finish, and decorating the vehicle with curvilinear leaf forms and intricate interlaced patterns from traditional Polynesian art.

With its sleepy-lidded headlights, the Tortoise was a familiar sight on the silly streets of Seattle. Freshly repainted for the first-ever Seattle Art Car Parade in July '97, it crawled dwon the roads for several more years before deep undercarriage rust enforced a meeting with the wrecker.
