Exuberant Mural by Larry Steiner

This huge mural, painted on four sheets of 4' x 8' panel, is part of the collection of SIT'n'SPIN, the unique Belltown eatery, nightspot and laundromat. In its present rather cramped installation in the hallway it is more difficult to appreciate the overall composition than in the piece's debut at Hempfest '96 (shown) when it covered an entire side of the main stage.

This mural is vintage Steiner. It's all here -- the bold color, the riotous invention, the mixture of carefully observed natural forms, science-fiction fantasy, and broad caricature. Egyptian gods, Blue Meanies, extraterrestrials in flying saucers, pagan deities, Alice in Wonderland characters all jamming in one mad, hallucinatory space. This is entirely typical of Steiner's output, which has been seen in comics, on leather jackets, and on the sides and hoods of numerous Art Cars over the years.
