* MOUNT * SHUKSAN *
Washington State
The North Cascade Mountains east of Bellingham, Washington provide vistas of awe-inspiring natural beauty. About an hour's drive east of Bellingham Mount Baker, a dormant volcano with spectacular glaciers on its conical slopes, rises next to slightly lower (9,200-foot) Mount Shuksan, a nonvolcanic peak which also boasts an interesting glacier system. The magnificent scenery is enhanced in autumn, when the low-growing Cascade blueberries (or huckleberries) cover upland meadows with brilliant red, lending a harmonious warmth to the palette and an odor of ripe blueberries to the crisp mountain air. This view is taken from Picture Lake, near Artist's Point.
