Drawing the graphic for the logo of the Ocean Research & Education Society of Gloucester, Massachusetts, Larry worked from photographs of the Society's research vessel, the 1908 wooden windjammer Regina Maris. Working in the days before computer graphics (when Word*Star was the gold standard in word-processing programs and you booted up your PC by loading MS-DOS from a series of 5.25" floppies), Larry first drew the silhouette in pencil, then cut it in Rubylith using special X-acto type knives. Linear details were then added by Rapidograph using Mylar overlays. The composited result was used for the Society's letterhead and the masthead of its biweekly newsletter, the Searchlight, during the last 2 years of Regina Maris' operation. At last report, the vessel was retired from the high seas and serving as a floating restaurant in Boston: a fitting fate for a ship that provided such gourmet quality chow to its crew in its oceanographic research days.
