One of Larry Neilson's pictorial interests is the wonderful realm of Nature and the out-of-doors. Raised in the beautiful Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts, he has long felt attuned to the casual perfection of wilderness and the allure of the changing seasons. The artist's hiking, camping, and environmental activities became even more pronounced when he moved to Seattle in 1990.
As a travel photographer, Larry tries to capture the telling detail which embodies the spirit of a place, as well as atmospheric shots of the must-see tourist attractions. His travel photos have been printed in Yankee, Altair, Endless Vacation, and Sweden Today Magazine, among other publications. Recent assignments have included Yankee's Travel Guide to Atlantic Canada, the Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce tourist guidebook, and the Pacific Northwest Bed & Breakfast Association.
As a photographer of Nature, Larry follows in the classic mold of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, using rich detail and sharp focus to emphasize texture and dramatic composition. He can often be seen lugging a tripod and a daypack of gear along the trail to render faithfully the ever-changing moods and patterns of Nature. His closeup and floral photography has been used in several multimedia dance performances, and as decorative art in large-scale murals for a corporate client. Recent projects include a series on Northwest waterfalls; a lyrical essay on wildflowers of Mt. Rainier's alpine meadows; and Water Sequence, an 8-minute slide presentation inspired by the textures and patterns of Water, set to a tinkling jazz score.
