Larry Neilson has a natural feel for the rough-hewn charm and elegant style of former times. The son of a private-school history professor, he graduated with honors in History from Vassar College, combining his knowledge of European colonialism and his fascination with Asia to produce a 75-page honors thesis on British India. He has lived and studied in Japan, gaining insight into foreign cultures, customs, and philosophies.

His familiarity with antique dress and bygone technologies--particularly maritime technologies--has provided Neilson with a rich vein of photographic subject matter, of which a few examples are presented here.
