A long-time jazz fan, Larry Neilson has been toting his cameras and gadget bags around to smoky jazz clubs and recital halls for three decades.

During that time, he has photographed many of the greats of Jazz and Black music, including Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Dexter Gordon, Max Roach, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Jo Jones, Betty Carter, Don Cherry, Queen Ida, Bobby Hutcherson, Paul Quinichette, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Doc Cheatham, to name but a few. It is sad that so many of these fine players haved passed on in recent years: Let that inspire the public to get out and enjoy our living treasures of music while they are still with us!

Larry Neilson's portfolio features many shots of the Pacific Northwest's home-grown talent, including Nancy King, Dave Frishberg, Ernestine Anderson, Bud Shank, Floyd Standifer, Don Lanphere, Chuck Metcalf, Denney Goodhew, Rebecca Kilgore, and Greta Matassa; and of the cream of New England jazzdom: the New Black Eagles, Dick Johnson and the Artie Shaw Orchestra, Rebecca Parris, Dave McKenna, Christopher Holliday, and Alan Dawson. His jazz photographs and reviews have appeared in Saxophone Journal, coda magazine, the Valley Advocate, Jazz Notes, the Boston Ledger, and countless other publications. His album covers and CD liner photo credits are numerous; he has handled publicity and cover shots for Columbia Records, MsManagement, fretless Records, and the Zoar, CM, Good Earth, and SunMuse labels. Mr. Neilson is also an accomplished photographer of dancers, mimes and jugglers, athletes, and rock musicians.
