Larry Neilson is one of America's premier photographers of sailboats and marine subjects, including yacht racing, historical tall ships, seascapes, lighthouses, industrial views of port facilities, and stirring shots of present-day merchant and naval shipping. An avid sailor himself, he is descended from the Mayflower Pilgrims John and Priscilla Alden, and numbers 19th-century New England whalemen among his ancestors. Neilson's inborn affinity for salt water and old boats comes through in his carefully composed and technically flawless marine photographs. His intuitive timing is also in evidence in his action shots of sailboat racing.
Neilson's love of nautical history has found expression in the production of the Web's leading resource on the history of the battleship, a picture history available at Big, Bad Battleships (dot) Com. In it you'll find essays on the armored fleets of the U.S., Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Japan, and more; detailed information on naval warfare from 1860 to 1918, on weapons, technology, and life at sea in the age of coal smoke and 12-inch guns. This lavishly illustrated study contains hardly any photos by Larry Neilson, but hundreds that were shot long before he was born, carefully restored and Photoshopped to bring the viewer an immediate, easy-to-grasp experience of maritime history.
