This Week in Seattle: Activist's Calendar PicksThe Seattle Council is composed of individuals dedicated to realizing progressive change in Seattle, statewide, and nationally. In these fateful times, our media is not providing adequate information for an informed electorate, so we are providing it ourselves.

Please consider joining our group for a regular meeting, or find information on joining us online. On our site you will find our Activist Calendar of Seattle-area events -- demonstrations, workshops, Webinars, citizen lobbying initiatives, and volunteer opportunities. Also you will find the link to our blog, Seattle Moves!, where you can monitor current events, read reports on recent activities, and have your own say by posting or commenting.

To the left, you will see the buttons linking to our Council's issue interest groups, studying and acting on policy questions and legislative measures concerning everything from healthcare to global warming, from reforming the media to war and peace. Using the links on these pages, you can connect directly to any of our groups and plug into our activities as much as suits you. We hope you find this site easy to use and helpful in planning your own campaign of social change.

New on MoveOn Seattle's Blog

On our blog this week, Julia Deak outlines the means of removing our money -- and power -- from the predatory banks that caused the current economic crisis. She sees the reinvigorated push for a state investment bank (like that very successfully operating in North Dakota) as one means this end, and gives detailed contact information to key legislators in Olympia who will be reviewing and voting on the proposal (HB 2040). Read post - search on Banks.

Also in the blog this week, Norm Conrad explores the roots of the current Republican assault on labor, democratic rights, and pet peeves of the Right.

About Us
The Seattle MoveOn Council

A Seattle woman protests against corporate power in an event sponsored by Moveon's Seattle Council, 8/10/10The Seattle Council of MoveOn.org is one of the largest in the organization’s national network, with more than 600 members. Building on the city’s rich tradition of progressive activism, Seattle MoveOn has played a key role in the movement, and has grown in strength fighting the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration. In 2008 the council spearheaded a robust local campaign to elect President Barack Obama, hosting dozens of calling parties and rallies throughout the region.

In keeping with MoveOn.org’s national philosophy, the Seattle Council is a group of citizens who believe that it is up to the people -- not the politicians -- to create positive change in our government, country, and world. Before there were online tools such as Facebook and Twitter to help people take concerted political action, MoveOn was using the power of the Internet to connect progressives and give them the opportunity to play an active role in our democracy. Now we have a dedicated team of people working toward MoveOn’s goals from the ground, researching and collaborating in order to build the change we wish to see.

VIDEO OF THE MONTH: The Story of Citizens United

New from Free Range Studios, this original video creatively lays out the background and issues underlying the Citizens United Supreme Court decision legalizing the dumping of unlimited amounts of corporate cash into elections, entirely without disclosure requirements. This is a great introduction to the controversial question: What it is, why it matters, what citizens can do to fight the decision.
