JAPANESE BARQUE KAIWO MARU
The majestic 4-masted barque Kaiwo Maru is one of two sail training vessels built in the 1930s (her sister is the Nippon Maru) and mercifully spared in the War. Beautifully maintained, the huge ship is seen tied up on the Seattle waterfront on a 1991 visit; familiar buildings in the background include the Columbia Seafirst Center (black curved skyscraper), the Second and Seneca Building (green dome), and the Seafirst Tower ("the box that the Space Needle came in"). Furthest on the right is the Scoop Jackson Federal Building, object of numerous pickets and protests (particularly since the Iraq War came began its ill-conceived gestation, engendering social service cuts and -- incredibly -- diminished services for veterans).
