RIP VAN WINKLE is only one of the murals
painted on the Ballard Bridge by aerosol artists from STREET
SMART ART, a City program which grants young graffiti writers legal
walls to paint approved designs on. Loose supervision by the City has not
resulted in tame or bad design, either. A case in point is the 3 surfaces
of the Ballard Bridge project: one side is covered with writhing hammerhead
sharks; another with tortured figures which call to mind the work of Orozco--or
Zap Comix. The third, underpass wall contains fantasy pieces painted by
DAVID LINDER, an art student at Seattle Central
Community College. Rip Van Winkle is joined by a Troll, an Ent, and an Elf
who bears an uncanny resemblance to Linder himself. Watch our Gallery
page for more work by the kickin' spraycan Cezannes of Street Smart Art!
