HAGAR'S TAVERN in Ballard commissioned
JIM CAREY to produce this Dada dreamscape on
the west-facing wall outside the bar in 1992. Deliriously depicted and accented
with subdued sunset shades of pink and orange, the mural was produced on
a tight budget using remaindered house paint. This stucco scene brings the
colorful resonance of Haight-Ashbury here to Seattle's Scandinavian heartland.
Carey is a professional artist whose murals and panels liven up Post Office
lobbies throughout the Pacific Northwest. Since the SASS site went up in 1995, Hagar's has been sold and the mural painted out on grounds of obscenity (go figure). The building now houses the Reading Gaol pub; but do not fear; Aaron Bell's tattoo parlor a few blocks up the street adds an even more outrageous note of kinkiness to this corner of Old Ballard!
