A society of Revolutionary War re-creationists, Glover's Regiment marches on patriotic holidays, shouldering period weapons and stepping to the fife and drum. Their name derives from the regiment of Marblehead mariners which enlisted under Marblehead's General John Glover. Poor at discipline and drill, but wizards on the water, they were responsible for rowing Washington's army across the Delaware, and for many other amphibious feats during the War of Independence. Here they fire a salute over the graves of some of the 500 Marbleheaders who laid down their lives for liberty during the Revolutionary War. The monument commemorates 27-year-old Captain Mugford, who captured a British transport laden with powder at a crucial point in the Revolutionary War, and was later killed successfully defending his ship, though greatly outnumbered by the attacking British. This photo was shot on Memorial Day, 1985.
