FEDERAL BUILDING PEACE RALLY, 3/15/03:
Flyer & Illustration by Larry Neilson
In the days leading up to the invasion of Iraq, Larry volunteered to perform many feats of design for graphics and the Web in a remarkably short period of time. This illustration was produced overnight for the No War Against Iraq Coalition for a rally in which protestors encircled the Jackson Federal Building in downtown Seattle, and wound it several times around with yellow crime scene tape.
This particular illustration was done in Illustrator 10. Luckily Larry had worked for some years in the Exchange Building, overlooking the plaza where noisy demonstrations take place frequently over one issue or another. Using the ability of Illustrator to perform iterative tasks and save labor, he made up a module of 4 windows and window niches and pasted it over and over to fill the outline of the skyscraper. The "protestor" stick figures were also copied over and over to automate production. The American flag is seen flying upside down, an internationally recognized symbol of distress. The shamrock denotes St. Patrick's Day, and a successful attempt to recruit protestors from among the many in town to celebrate the Irish-American holiday. The protest was a success, as can be seen in Larry's documentary movie of the subject. Click here to see the completed flyer.
