* DON * CHERRY *

The late Don Cherry, a pioneering member of Ornette Coleman’s avant-garde quartet in the early Sixties (and of the reunion band Old and New Dreams), and since then a proponent of indigenous sounds from Africa, emotes while strumming an exotic bass instrument made of calabash gourd (resonator), bamboo (neck), cat-gut (strings), and sheet copper (percussion shaker at the head of the neck). A gentle and generous man, Cherry was captured at a CD release party at the Iron Horse nightclub in Northampton, Massachusetts, in 1986. Behind Cherry is percussionist Tony Vacca playing balafon; also on the date was saxophonist and flautist Tim Moran of New Haven, Connecticut.
