As a part of the Fremont Fair in Seattle's funky Fremont District (known for its unconventional approach to the arts), the Seattle Art Cars hosted an invitational exhibition of some 30 incredible Art Cars from across the U.S. and Canada in Fremont, Center of the Universe, on June 17-18, 2000. We fielded a non-motorized ensemble of cardboard art cars and a magic bus in the Fremont Solstice Parade, joining our energies to this zany explosion of grass-roots creativity! We paraded our cutting-edge threads in a silly fashion show on stage at Redhook Brewery Saturday night, hosted by Portland's own Li'l Weeny Kween; and we formed up for an Art Car Parade all over North Seattle on Sunday June 18. Cars were shown both days along N. 35th Street in front of the Fremont Fine Arts Foundry. For information on Art Car Blow-Out 2001, call (206) 297-8019 or (206) 937-2058, or drop us an e-mail!

We had some 30 Art Cars in our big parade, including MSV, Caulk It, Dick Celine's beautifully restored '48 Chevy, and Slim's Recycled pickup & trailer. Our parade route started at the Lincoln Toe Truck at Republican and Fairview, proceeded past the red-lit TV cameras down the east side of Lake Union and across the University Bridge to the U-District. Escorted by the Seattle Police Department's motorcycle unit (fresh from protecting Al Gore on his visit to Seattle), we continued northbound on 15th Ave. NE as far as NE 45th, dog-legged over to NE 50th Street via 11th, then went west across 50th through Wallingford as far as Stone Way N. Turning south on Stone Way, we proceeded as far as North 36th before turning our prows westward, driving past the Fremont Troll and on into funky Fremont, Center of the Universe. Our route then took us down N. 36th, past the Statue of Lenin, where celebrity commentator Ruby Montana held forth along with Dr. Schlock at our Reviewing Stand. After rumbling past the Statue of Lenin (shades of May Days in Red Square!) and rendering the Art Car salute (an irreverent raspberry blown to those on the reviewing stand), our motorized column turned into the grounds of the Fremont Fair on time around 2:05 p.m. Proceeding slowly through throngs of hollering, bouquet-tossing Art Car fans, we parked along N. 35th between Tyrrell's dog food factory and the Fremont Fine Art Foundry for a second fun-filled day of showing our vehicles to the public.
